The day has finally arrived for lives to equalise
For the precious downtrodden are done
It’s time for all of us to stand equal under the sun
At last tables have turned
For a long time, the meek have yearned
To be seen in real, true colours
Akin to all sisters and brothers
Madness to have been any different
The breath we breathe is significant
As is the colour of our blood
Our humanness, our emotions, and our love
So let’s all breathe together
Free our minds from all tethers
For the time is here, it’s come
Uniting people as One
When George Floyd lost his life under the callous boot and brute force of an American police officer and three helpers, the world cried out against their cruelty. ‘I can’t breathe,’ George called as he pleaded for his life and for his mum. But the policeman didn’t listen, and ignored the cries of onlookers demanding he stop. ‘Black Lives Matter’ became the new, long overdue mantra, and people chanted it in numbers around the world, regardless of coronavirus fears. Social distancing dismissed in favour of brother and sister solidarity, because if Black lives don’t matter, then no lives matter.
Inspiring me to write the above poem…
